The new Volvo EX30 will offer a suite of safety systems designed to bring big-car tech to the small SUV sector – including tech aimed at preventing occupants opening their doors into the path of oncoming cyclists.

As part of the build-up to the world debut on 7 June, Volvo is teasing some of its features. The door opening alert will chime if an oncoming bike, pedestrian or vehicle is approaching, while an eye-tracking camera will monitor drivers’ state of alertness and prompt them if they are not paying attention.

The Volvo EX30 is confirmed as the next electric car in the Swedes’ line-up – a baby crossover designed to stretch the EV entry point of the range down to a more affordable price, comfortably undercutting the XC40.

This is a fully electric baby SUV and, for now, only a handful of shadowy, artfully cropped teaser photographs is available (flick through the gallery above to see the full picture). Gothenburg will unveil the new EX30 fully next month, but it has let slip a few details already.

‘On 7 June at 12.30pm, the new, fully electric Volvo EX30 SUV will make its global debut,’ Volvo confirmed. ‘On the same date, it will also become available to order or pre-order in selected markets.’ British customers will be able to place deposits from that date.

Volvo EX30: what we know so far

The new smaller EV will, following in the wake of the EX90 range-topper, bookend Volvo’s electric SUV line-up. The two cars were teased together (see below) and are said to share manifold styling similarities, spearheading the next generation of family Volvos. The smaller, cheaper EX30 is scheduled to arrive in UK dealership from spring 2024.

Volvo EX30 leads EX90 at the bigger SUV's debut

Although none of the engineering details of the car have yet been formally announced, CAR magazine understands it is based on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) shared platform developed by parent company Geely.

That’s the same hardware that underpins the Smart #1 and Zeekr X, suggesting a footprint around 4.3m long – making the new Volvo EX30 a rival to the Hyundai Kona, Mini Countryman and forthcoming Renault 4 EV.

Battery range, prices

We’ll have to wait until 7 June to hear the full specs on the EX30, but word is the battery pack is likely to be around 68kWh in capacity, suggesting an EV range of around 250-300 miles.

Teased: the new 2024 Volvo EX30

Expect a single motor for the majority of sales, although an all-wheel drive, twin-motor Volvo EX30 is likely to stretch the small crossover into loftier, more lucrative parts of the segment when the bean counters demand.

The least powerful, lowest-spec models are expected to cost from around £33k in the UK. Don’t expect them to skimp on safety or digital creds, however – the Google Android-powered infotainment system will be a the heart of the Volvo EX30 and a host of clever apps and connectivity features are planned.
